Working with History: AGA at the Arts United Center

This fall, the Arts United Center reopened after a major renovation.  For AGA, the project meant working with a rare Louis Kahn-designed building that's been a downtown Fort Wayne landmark for over 50 years.

Unlike new construction, renovation work requires a different approach.  Over several months in summer 2025, our team worked throughout the building, installing new doors and updating hardware on existing doors, reglazing old windows, and installing new curtain wall and storefront systems.

The reglazing work presented particular challenges.  Many of the windows were located in areas with limited accessibility, requiring creative scaffolding setups and close teamwork to remove and reinstall the glass safely.  But the biggest challenge was preserving the building's historic character while incorporating modern materials.  We had to maintain the original look and profile while providing updated efficiency and functionality, which is a much more delicate process than simply replacing everything with new materials.

The project added a new Arts Education Wing, where we installed the curtain wall system on the second story and the storefront system with doors and glass on the first floor.  The building expanded from 660 to 725 seats while maintaining its architectural integrity.  We worked alongside The Hagerman Group and MKM Architecture + Design throughout the project.

The Arts United Center serves as home to Fort Wayne Ballet and Fort Wayne Civic Theatre, hosting performances, dance competitions, and community events throughout the year.
